We started our journey by helping artists across the country with everything from contract negotiations, brand development, and financial management – if it was something they needed to get paid, we were there. However, once we saw that our expertise could translate and bring success to companies in any industry, we made moves and rebranded as MDOT Marketing.

, About Us

Marcus, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.

My journey in entrepreneurship started very early in my childhood. My parents would have my siblings and I in church all of the time…..I mean ALL of TIME. When I attended church, I would sneak out and head to the local candy man to buy honey buns, cookies, and something to drink. The other kids would always ask me, “Where did you get that from, can I have some? I will pay you a dollar for that soda. ” I only paid 25 cents for it but I sold to the other kids for a dollar. That’s when I realized, I can make money like this. When I attended undergrad at Savannah State University, I probably switched my major 3 or 4 times but it was always in the business building. I would work with local artists and have fraternity parties. All of them were pretty successful and I wanted to further that drive so I applied for the Universal Motown College Intern. This was the first rollout of the now College and Lifestyle internship programs that are so popular today. Out of 2500 applicants, I was the only one chosen in the Southeastern region. That internship led me to Miami to work in Promotions for the label and I eventually started my own Marketing and Promotions company. Now my company has evolved more than just promoting independent artists. MDOT Marketing is a full Digital and Experiential Marketing Agency. We service businesses throughout many industries all over the US.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

Nothing has been smooth for me. I had many challenges and obstacles. One of my major challenges were trying to do too much at one time. I had a teen club, a travel company, worked as a teacher, and artist manager. Doing all of those things at one time without a proper team behind you is a recipe for disaster. I was very young and did not fully understand what my major strengths were in business. I just wanted to make money and let people know that I’m out here moving. The most important thing I’ve learned about entrepreneurship is to have a plan. You cannot forget the reason why you are doing this. Stay inspired and stay working on your goals daily.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about MDOT Marketing – what should we know?

My Instagram name is Mdot_4dawin. I take an unknown entity to make them a household name in their local and regional area. Rather that is an artist, business, author, personality etc. I thrive on working with unknowns. My team and I are great at building relationships to further a company’s reach. We specialize in Digital and Experiential marketing. Experiential marketing is a strategy that engages consumers from using branded experiences. Sometimes referred to as “live marketing” or “event marketing experience,” the idea is to create a memorable impact on the consumer. This sets us apart from a lot of agencies because we don’t solely rely on digital marketing even though we are certified across multiple platforms. We understand traditional and non-traditional markets as well as major markets. I’ve worked on the music side and the corporate side. The uniqueness of MDOT Marketing is that we started in 2010 and have managed to adapt and innovate in today’s industry.

What have been some of the most important lessons you’ve learned over the course of your career?

I would have started my company in undergrad when I had the most attention and built my team from there. It probably would have taken off a lot sooner but I thank God for where I am now because those mistakes made me who I am today.
